Evidence-Based Menopause Care with a Midwifery Approach
Helping middle-aged women feel like themselves again by providing education, support, and evidence-based treatment of menopausal symptoms.
My Approach To Menopause Care.
Menopause is defined as the lack of menstrual periods for one year, but there are many other symptoms people may not associate with menopause. Perimenopause is marked by irregular menstrual bleeding which changes in frequency and duration. Perimenopause comes before menopause and may last one year or several years. Many people experience hot flashes during perimenopause. These hot flashes are very treatable with a variety of prescription medications. People also frequently experience anxiety, depression, brain fog, trouble sleeping, increased migraine headaches, joint pain, weight gain, and a change in their sex drive. During menopause, changes in bone density, heart health, and vaginal irritation are common problems.
But there is hope! A quick internet search offers many non-evidence-based treatments for these symptoms. Cindy believes with a better understanding of the normal physiology and symptoms of menopause, people will instead look for evidence-based methods to deal with the symptoms. What does “Midwifery Approach” Mean?
To Cindy, the “Midwifery Approach” entails taking the time to really get to know her patients and partnering with them in their healthcare. This partnership allows her to serve as a health coach or advisor, providing evidence-based information and options rather than making decisions for patients. Each person is unique and brings their own beliefs for what works best for their body, health, and lifestyle.
As a Nurse Midwife, Cindy has practiced in high volume clinics providing birth control, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, pap smears, breast cancer screenings, gynecologic problem visits, prenatal care, and delivering babies at Deaconess and Sacred Heart Hospitals. But for Cindy, the joy of providing healthcare is in getting to know her patients . It is difficult to fully understand the whole person aspect of patient care in a 10-15 minute visit.
At Minimize the Pause, all new patient visits are scheduled for one hour and return visits for 30 minutes. This ensures the patient leaves with the education, prescriptions, and treatment options that work best for them.
